I'm Kate Schweitzer, lead senior staff writer for JAMA Medical News. Today, we're joined by JAMA Associate Editor, Dr. Gil Rubinovich. Dr. Rubinovich is a neurologist and director of the University of California San Francisco Alzheimer Disease Research Center.

We're going to be discussing highlights from the recent annual Alzheimer's Association International Conference, or AAIC for short, in London, which he attended. Welcome, Gil. Thank you so much, Rita.

It's really a pleasure to be here and to summarize what I think was a really exciting conference with a lot of momentum in the evolution of diagnostic tools, new therapies, and prevention strategies for Alzheimer's disease and other associated dementias. Great. Well, you know, people all over the world this summer were enthralled with the FIFA World Cup, and soccer made it into the AAIC scientific program.

One new study presented at the conference, which has not yet been peer-reviewed or published, compared the brains of middle-aged former elite soccer players with controls who did not have a history of repetitive head impacts. What differences did the researchers find between the former soccer players and controls?
