Welcome to Airlines Confidential. I'm Scott McCartney wishing everyone a happy and safe 4th of July. The 250th birthday of the United States is an important milestone. And just to put the airline industry in a little historical perspective for the holiday, I'm reminded that commercial air service has only existed for about half of those 250 years. The first commercial airline flight by Tony Janus

across Tampa Bay was January 1, 1914. The first seat was auctioned off for $400, but standard tickets after that were $5, which in today's dollars would be about $168, which seems remarkably correct, except that the first airline route only covered about 20 miles. Still, it was a time saver compared to going by land

between Tampa and St. Pete in your Model T Ford without any bridges, so the long way around. Dave Hilfman, I suspect you would have been lining up for one of those seats on the St. Petersburg-Tampa airboat line. Welcome back, Dave. I'm curious, do you have World Cup fever? Do you have Independence Day fever? Or do you just have the usual golf fever, Dave?

So, I love that whole region and used to go to those Tony Janus Awards. I know you still go over to those from time to time. And you should be honored with them.
