Public.com presents The Rundown, your daily market update in 10 minutes. My name is Zaid Admani and today is Wednesday, May 27th. In today's episode, we'll break down Micron's path to hitting a trillion dollar valuation. We'll also tell you about Nvidia's massive bet on Taiwan and a new deal between SpaceX and American Airlines.

The stock market kicked off the week on a strong note. The S&P 500 jumped 0.6% on Tuesday, while the Nasdaq did even better, ripping 1.2%, both indices closing at record highs.

Micron was the star of the show yesterday, jumping 19%, and the company officially crossed a $1 trillion market cap for the first time ever. We talked about Micron on yesterday's show. They make memory chips, and historically, memory has been a brutal boom and bust industry. But right now, there's an explosion in demand for memory because memory has become a critical component for AI data centers. And Micron has been a big beneficiary of that. Micron stock has nearly doubled in the last month alone. And here's a wild stat.

It took Micron just 48 trading days to go from a $500 billion market cap to a $1 trillion market cap. Just for some context here, it took NVIDIA 490 days to make that same jump back in 2022 and 2023. So this surge from Micron is even more explosive than what we saw from NVIDIA when they first burst onto the scene three plus years ago, following the launch of ChatGPT and the start of the AI boom. And by the way, it's not just Micron. The enthusiasm around memory has spread overseas too.

The South Korean memory maker SK Hynix also crossed a $1 trillion market cap this week. Now, the key question moving forward is whether this is sustainable. Like I said, memory has historically been a very boom and bust industry. And that's why memory stocks typically trade at a discount compared to other chip stocks. But investors are now thinking that maybe the industry has permanently changed because of AI. We'll have to see how this all plays out. I'm not going to lie to you guys, though. I'm starting to get a little nervous. I feel like memory is still a commodity.

You know, it's not like NVIDIA where there's a moat for their proprietary AI chips or their CUDA software ecosystem. Memory is memory. It's kind of like oil. You know, it's a commodity. It's all the same. And I feel like the supply and demand will come into balance eventually. I mean, it could take a couple of years, maybe even longer. But look, if Micron is down like 50 plus percent in a year or two, I wouldn't be shocked. But look, I could be wrong here. Memory stocks continue to surge this morning at the time of this recording. So we're going to stay on top of this story.
