More market details to come, but first. The build-out of hyperscalers has placed hyper-attention on the need for power to run all that compute. Is nuclear the solution? Offshore wind farms? Or maybe it's you, the home energy consumer. So says a new announcement today from Tesla, Sunrun Solar and Renew Home, a Google spinoff that manages smart thermostats.

The three companies plan to knit together the rooftop solar panels, home batteries, and smart thermostats already installed in millions of American homes and use them as a single massive virtual power plant. Here's how it works. After homeowners opt in, the companies use software to direct thousands of those home batteries to charge during the day when solar energy is abundant and release that power into the grid in the evening when demand spikes.

And here's a fun detail. Smart thermostats can even be nudged remotely just a degree or two up or down to ease the load. Earlier this year, the White House told major AI and tech companies that they need to, quote, build, bring, or buy their own power for new data centers rather than shifting those costs onto the public grid.

But I suppose there wasn't a mandate not to utilize the grid. Utilities generally have enough spare capacity to serve new data centers most of the time, but not when demand for electricity is very high, like in a heat wave or a cold snap. And the companies behind today's announcement contend that bouncing out of power needs would reduce or even eliminate the need to add power plants alongside new data centers. Some states, like California, have programs that already operate along the lines of what these three companies are proposing.

In fact, I remember when I lived in L.A., the utility company was always offering free smart thermostats to homeowners, laying the baseline to build out that network. But Sunrun Tesla and Renew Home would need to persuade electric utilities, grid managers, and state regulators across the country to work with them if they hope to hit the goal of harnessing 16 ...
