You've been paying for America's debt problem your entire life through inflation and a dollar that buys less and less. But what happens when even that isn't enough to keep the system running? Well, right now we may be getting our answer to what comes next. Just days after the U.S. took the extraordinary step of intervening in Japan's currency market, U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent proposed something else.

A new way for countries like Japan to get the cash they need without having to sell their U.S. debt. Now, this might sound like a boring technicality, but underneath this proposal raises a much bigger question. How far will the U.S. go to keep rates from rising? And ultimately, who pays the price?

But there's actually a tool that already exists that central banks can use when they become so addicted to cheap debt, so desperate to regain control of interest rates that they can no longer afford. It's called yield curve control. A mechanism already written into central bank policy that allows them to override the free market, control interest rates, and ultimately transfer the cost onto the savers.

And while what Scott Bessent is proposing today isn't technically yield curve control, which we'll get into, the objective is the same. To stop pressure on the Treasury market to prevent U.S. borrowing costs from going even higher. But yield curve control isn't some conspiracy or a hypothetical. It's already happened. In fact, it happened in Japan, which in part is what has led to the mess that they're in today.
