Our guests today are Rebecca Heider, who's the AEO Vice President for Governmental Affairs, and Dr. Stephen McLeod, who is the CEO of the AEO. talk about why do we ever have a National Institute to begin with? What's the story behind that? So, that, of course, is a really good question. And I think for me, the place to start is, so what did we have before we had the NEI? And why did that change? So, if you go back in history, the NIH as we think of it today was established around 1948. And so, it was in 1950 that we had

the National Institute of Neurologic Disease and Blindness that was set up. And, you know, truth is that from the very beginning, from the outset, there was concern from the vision research community that a lot of the research priority setting in the governance was actually going to lie on the side of the neurologic disease community. And that was potentially problematic
