The last decade in biotechnology has been intense. Well, gosh, let's just say the last five years, or let's just say the last few months. It's all intense, isn't it? With the global pandemic, the rise of artificial intelligence and breakthroughs that once sounded like science fiction are suddenly becoming real. I just think you said the last decade, and I thought that seems like a long time. And then I realized it's not actually that long. And now I feel really old.

But anyway, the field is moving super fast. And one of the fields that is moving super, super fastest is gene and cell therapy. I'm going to patent that. Super fastest. That's a new adjective. I like it. Technologies that could allow doctors to treat diseases by delivering genetic instructions directly to the cells that need to move. Some of these on the market already, and they are moving at pace.

It sounds simple, but in reality, getting the right genetic treatment to the right cell at the right time in the right organ is a huge scientific challenge. Yes. It's like, like, just how do you pinpoint exactly where you've got your medicine to go? So in this episode, we're taking a big step back and we're asking a big question. Where does the science actually stand right now?

And to help us explore that, basically, we brought together two experts working at the cutting edge of gene therapy technologies. We are trying to use those vectors as a good pulse man to deliver cargo into our brain. It opens the heart to really deep disease understanding and pairing with all those advanced treatment options. And that's what matters on today's episode of Discovery Matters.

Dr. Li Xiaoma is a scientist based in Westlake in China, who develops new gene therapy technologies to help doctors send genetic treatments directly to specific cells into a patient's body. It's a beautiful city. And our university is relatively new to the world. It's about like 10 years old. And I've been to Westlake and it is a beautiful city and it is an amazing university.

And I just loved hanging out there with the team. Though I didn't unfortunately get to meet Dr. Ma. So what does she do there? What I am doing actually, my laboratory doing in Westlake University and my startup called Westlake Gene Tech, we are focusing on gene and cell therapy. Especially we are focusing on how to make gene and cell therapy more accessible to broad populations,

which means we cannot make gene therapy drugs that are super expensive. Otherwise people cannot get it. So we asked Dr. Ma to take a step back and look at where we are post-COVID, post the emergence of AI and all these things that have happened in recent history, and simply ask what is the state of science in the world at this moment? It's a quite broad topic.
