Some UAN and anhydrous summer-fill programs opened at 8 a.m. and were pulled by lunch, according to Josh Linville. But moving fast on fertilizer only protects one side of the farm’s margin. Shay Foulk and Josh, Vice President of Fertilizer at StoneX, explain how to compare the fertilizer quote with the grain price before locking in 2027 inputs.
Josh shares why he advised his own family to secure fall anhydrous, when waiting until spring may still be worth discussing, and why phosphate has to be handled field by field. Shay says the opening phosphate quotes he has seen are $60 to $80 per ton above last year. If soil fertility can support a reduced application without costing yield, there may be room to cut demand. If it cannot, price alone is not a reason to take agronomic risk.
They also cover:
Why locking fertilizer without grain-price protection leaves the overall margin exposed
How to judge fertilizer in bushels of corn, not only dollars per ton
How the buy-or-wait decision differs among UAN, anhydrous, phosphate, and potash
Why a bearish August WASDE may delay fertilizer demand rather than eliminate it
