I'm Avery Weiss, Vice President of Trucking. This is episode 370 for the week of June 22, 2026.

Before we get into any of the data this week, I wanted to highlight an opportunity that is coming up in just over two months. So this will be a little bit of a shorter episode of the podcast than usual because we only have a couple of major economic indicators to discuss. But we have a fair amount to talk about on the weekly data. And in any event, I'm going to make it up to you next week. I promise you will definitely get your money's worth. OK, so let's get right to the weekly data.

We'll start with diesel and crude prices, both of which keep falling. And that is especially true of diesel. The national average retail price of on-highway diesel plunged 22.7 cents to $4.83.2 cents a gallon during the week ended June 22nd. Now, since practically hitting a nearly four-year high in early May, diesel prices have plummeted close to 81 cents in seven weeks.

And that includes about 69 cents over just the past four weeks. So just how big a deal is a 22.7 cent drop in diesel prices? It is the second largest single week decrease in the roughly 32 years that the Energy Information Administration has been tracking those prices. If you're curious, and I'm pretty sure you are, the largest drop in diesel prices ever was 21 or 28.1 cents during the final week of October 2005.

Now, for those of you who haven't been in the industry for more than 20 years, that drop in October 2005 was part of a rapid normalization of diesel prices following the recovery from Hurricanes Katrina...
