the implementation of Section 301 tariffs on more than 80 countries, and the implications of tariff provisions contained within the Russian sanctions bill currently making its way through Congress. All that and more on today's episode of The Trade Guys. All right, Trade Guys, we were off the air last week, so we've got a lot to catch up on. So let's dive right into today's episode.

And the first big issue I want to cover this week is President Trump's proclamation to impose a 50% tariff on certain goods from Canada, which would go into effect on August 19. Scott, this was big news, so can you tell us what's driving this? And also, under what authority is the president proposing these tariffs? Yes, let me talk about the section of law that he used for this. And also, this is the continued tension between the US and Canada, or a whole range of issues, trade among them.

But this was an action taken under Section 338 of the Tariff Act of 1930, also known as Smoot-Hawley. It was actually a direct lift from a previous Tariff Act of 1922. So it's been in US law for over 100 years, but very seldom used.
