Do you believe that by the end of this year that we will see autonomous Tesla Cybercabs in customer hands? Hello and welcome back to the InsideEVs Plugged-In Podcast, a weekly news show from InsideEVs all about the future of transportation. I'm Tim Levin. And I'm Mac Hogan.

On this week's show, we have a bunch of RoboTaxi news to dig into from Tesla, Lucid, Uber and more. For years, the RoboTaxi story has basically been the Waymo story. While nearly every other company either stumbled or retreated or shelved their ambitions, Waymo kept its head down, kept expanding and has built something that actually works commercially. They are the one to beat right now, full stop.

They have had their stumbles, especially recently. There have been a few incidents, but right now Waymo does over 500,000 paid rides per week across 11 U.S. cities with more on the way. But also something is shifting, I think, in this industry. This week alone, we have a bunch of news that tells you that the rest of the industry is not conceding this race to Waymo.

They are very much pressing ahead. And I think the big question for a long time was, will autonomous cars ever work? And now the question is like, how exactly? Like, how exactly will this industry work? Who will win? Will it be the company that builds the car, the company that makes the software, the company like Uber that owns the platform?

Or will it be the one that, like Tesla, that tries to do all of that at the same time? So let's start with Tesla. The interesting news this week was around CyberCab. You know, Tesla has its robo taxi service, which is immature, but like to Tesla's credit exists after like so many years of promising to do self-driving cars.

They have, you know, some dozens of these actually rolling around in Texas with nobody in the driver's seat. The next sort of step change that they're advertising is CyberCab, right? The purpose built two-seater specifically for robo taxi operations. And this week we finally learned a little bit more about what that actually is and what's under the hood. So why don't you tell us a little bit about that, Mac?

Yeah. So this came up, it looks like it was first spotted by Car and Driver. I want to give them a shout out. But yeah, their EPA certificate- Never heard of them. Yeah. Poop? You tell me you talk about gas cars? Cringe. Anyway, their EPA certification for the CyberCab came through. It looks like it was filed last month. But so we get some real specs on this thing for the first time. This is something weird about Tesla, too, where they'll often reveal a car and reveal certain specs,

but be very light on the details. And then the testing kind of turns just happen after the reveal. But in this case, we now know it's about 3,100 pounds, which is like six to 700 pounds lighter than a Model 3. Very light by EV standards. About the same weight as like a loaded Toyota Corolla, which is ...
