This Asian currency crisis is continuing to escalate and it's forcing governments from all over the region to get desperate. From India to Indonesia, South Korea and Japan, their situations are becoming a genuine threat to stability. Because when a currency falls because of a dollar shortage, that's not just a foreign exchange problem. It's not just a bad day on a currency chart. It risks becoming a destabilizing feedback loop. And here's why. Most global commodities are priced in dollar.

Oil is priced in dollars as we know. A lot of trade financing runs through the Eurodollar system. Many corporations, they borrow in dollar denominations. Banks, importers, and governments, they all need dollars. So when the local currency falls, everything priced in dollars becomes more expensive. Energy, food, materials, costs, foreign debt becomes harder to service. Companies that borrow it in dollars suddenly need more local currency to repay the same dollar debt. Banks become more cautious and investors, they start hedging.

The Eurodollar system gets even more nervous and pulls even farther back. And that's the dangerous part. A weaker currency creates more dollar demand. More dollar demand weakens the currency further. Then policymakers intervene. They sell reserves. They raise their policy rates. They warn speculators. They inspect banks and tighten rules. They try to convince everyone that everything is under control. But nothing is under control. And the volatility it's creating already is becoming harder and harder to hide.

And governments have clearly stepped up their efforts because the consequences are spilling over into financial markets, into intratrace markets, as well as the real economy. And yet, even as governments do more, currencies continue to fall because this is a Eurodollar story. And that Eurodollar story is, as I said, escalating to the point now that we're seeing these governments all over Asia get increasingly desperate. So the dollar is rising again. And this time, the pressure is showing up where it can do the most damage.

Across Asia's major importers, their manufacturers, their dollar-dependent financial systems. Now, the mainstream explanation is usually about interest rate differentials. The Fed's too high. Asian central banks are too low. The Bank of Japan is always behind the curve. So emerging market central banks, they need to raise their policy rates. They've got to attack speculators who are attacking their own currencies. But all those explanations are, at best, incomplete. Because if this were only about interest rates, an intervention would work better.

Rate hikes would produce more than a day or two of reprieve. Warnings against speculation might have a longer impact. And burning through reserves in this way would not have such a short half-life. Instead, we're obviously seeing the oppo...
