Eight years after it first flew, Boeing 737-7, the smallest model in the MAX family, has finally won FAA certification. The question now is whether any airlines beyond Southwest will order it in significant quantities. Senior Editor Guy Norris joins us from the west coast of the U.S. with his take on what certification means for Boeing and the airline industry.

Speaking of airlines, it's been a turbulent year with the Persian Gulf War and resulting spike in jet fuel prices. Some airlines seem to be weathering the storm while others are suffering badly. Senior Air Transport Editor Christine Boynton and Executive Editor Jens Vlatao join us with their insights on whether the crisis will force more consolidation in the industry.

And what was United Airlines Chief Scott Kirby thinking when he reportedly floated mega mergers with Delta Airlines and American Airlines? I'm going to ask our panel what they think about it. But Guy, let's start off with the big news. It's been a long wait. The 737-7 is certified. Yeah, thanks, Joe. I mean, what a milestone.

You really can't say enough about how significant this is in terms of Boeing's recovery, both from a sort of industrial and marketing perspective. But I think what the real thing is, of course, is it represents a reset of its relationship with the FAA and the regulators.

Of course, the 737-7, as you rightly said, it's the newest, it's the smallest member of the 737 MAX family. So it's really in terms of its business appeal, it's sort of Southwest is really the biggest customer for it. And I know Christine will talk to us about that later on.
