We've got a lot of news to get to in this episode, so I'm pleased to be joined by Kathy Stahl, Senior Manager of Revenue Cycle Analytics with HFMA. Kathy, welcome. Hey, Nick. Thanks.

So a couple of things I wanted to ask you about. One is in recent weeks, we got news about the Medicaid work requirement, specifically how CMS proposes to implement the requirement, which was legislated in H.R. 1, the One Big Beautiful Bill Act. The consensus in the provider community seems to be that these new regulations, which technically, by the way, are an interim final rule with comment period, meaning it's possible that adjustments could still be made.

But the consensus is that these regs are more stringent and more of a compliance burden than the language in the OBBBA would have indicated. And it's not like everybody was feeling particularly relaxed, even just about the legislative language. But what did you see of note in this rule as we look to the January 1st, 2027 start of the nationwide work requirement for most adults in the Medicaid expansion population? You're right, Nick. There are a lot of concerns.

And the hospital communities were really waiting on the final rule to come out June 1st for a better definition of medical frailty. But the problem, I think, what they found once that rule was published is that it was way more constrictive than what they initially thought. But this requirement goes into effect January 1st, like you mentioned. There is a state that went live on May 1st. So they've got to backtrack now.
