GLP-1 Receptor Agonists in GI Cancers: Hype or Promise?

Hello and welcome to the ASCO Daily News Podcast. I'm your host, Dr. Monty Pal. I'm a medical oncologist, professor, and vice chair of academic affairs at City of Hope in Los Angeles. Today, we're going to dive into a story that's really been at the tip of the tongue of many oncologists and patients alike, and this is related to GLP-1 receptor agonists. We've heard lots about this in general medicine, and now it's really making waves in oncology. This year at ASCO, and we'll dive into this in further detail, there was a really compelling abstract that looked at over 10,000 patients, really finding some interesting ideas.

interesting associations between GLP-1s and metastatic cancers and the risk of progression and, frankly, overall survival. But today, we're actually going to narrow the scope even further and take a look at the role of GLP-1s in the context of gastrointestinal cancers. Now, I'm really thrilled today to have my dear friend and colleague, Dr. Rechner Shroff, to discuss the conflicting clinical reviews and to really help us understand the biological mechanisms of GLP-1 receptor agonists in GI tumors. Dr. Shroff is the Chief of the Division of Hematology and Oncology at the

University of Arizona College of Medicine Tucson. She's also a professor of medicine, the associate director of clinical investigations at the University of Arizona, and also the John F. and Valley S. Duval Endowed Professor of Gastrointestinal Oncology. That's a lot of titles there, Rechner. It's great to see you. So great to be here. Thanks for having me. You got it.
