Welcome to Aviation Week's Check 6 Podcast. I'm Joe Anselmo, Editorial Director. Continuing a tradition that began 20 years ago, Aviation Week editors sat down prior to the Farnborough Airshow with the CEOs of commercial aviation's two biggest companies, Boeing's Kelly Ortberg and Airbus' Guillem-Foy. And continuing a newer tradition, since we didn't have podcasts in 2006, Aviation Week's editors who conducted those interviews now join us to give their thoughts on

the answers they heard. Here with me are Jan Schvotel and Robert Wall, who interviewed Fauri in Toulouse, and Guy Norris, who joined me in Seattle to interview Ortberg. Guy, let's start with Kelly Ortberg, who took over this very troubled company 22 months ago. My takeaway, my big takeaway was, he was upbeat, he was confident, he feels like he has his arms around the problem and is fixing the

culture in the company. He's confident there's no roadblocks to finally getting the 73710 and 777X certified. He wouldn't say the defense unit won't ever have write-offs again, but he said it's operating more like a, quote, normal defense business. And on culture, there was a quote I loved. He said, you're never done, but it's probably going faster and better than I would have guessed 22 months ago. People said, Kelly, this is going to take forever. It's 180,000 people. You're not going to be able

fast. And I said, well, we'll see. But then Guy, he poured a lot of cold water on the idea that we will see a new narrowbody airplane from Boeing anytime soon. So those were sort of my takeaways. What did you think? Yeah, no, you're absolutely right, Joe. It was a very, very positive overall message to begin with. And then, of course, quite rightly, you said that he did sort of surprise

us, really. That aspect was we felt like that was going to be the next shoe to drop here. You know, he said, remember 2025, he said, we need three things to even consider a new airplane. We need financial stability, demand from the market, and the technology to be in place. So we said, well, okay, you've just spent the last hour basically telling us that things are right, really on track

financially. The technology, you know, you guys never stop with the technology. So presumably, the market is also going to be talking about a new airplane. That's all we're hearing about. But no, it wasn't like that at all. In fact, he was saying that if anything, the demand for this new airplane has gone further back than it's maybe a year further back than it was last year.

Yeah. And to be clear, you and I probably came at him three or four times with the same question, because we wanted to make sure we just weren't misunderstanding him or he said something awkwardly. And he was pretty adamant ...
