There are certain people that when they pass, even if you're not intimately familiar with their work, you know in your bones that something has happened. Something is lost. John Prine comes to mind. I wasn't familiar with his work, but when he died, I knew people who were gutted, and I knew in my bones that collectively, we had lost something. John Prine died over six years ago. This isn't about that. Om Malik died this week.

His site om.co ran a very short post yesterday saying Om Malik passed away on the 24th of June at Stanford Hospital after a long health journey with his heart. He was surrounded by family and friends. The post invited readers to share remembrances of Om in the comments or on various social media platforms. When I first saw the site, there were two comments. Four hours later, there were more comments than it seemed sensible to try to count.

I've got no connection to Mr. Malik. I know his writing was thoughtful and insightful. When an article of his interested me, I really felt like I was reading something. Like I was getting something. Going through a few of his recent posts, I feel like I should have been paying more attention. The one that blew my mind yesterday, We Are Living in Pinocchio's World, was just written about a month ago.

It's actually a rumination kicked off by a fountain pen that he bought, a Mont Blanc writer's edition dedicated to Carlo Collodi, author of the novel Pinocchio. Yeah, the one about the wooden, yeah, comes a boy, you know, Pinocchio. I can't share the part that got me because there was no one part that got me. There were several. I can share a part that struck me, though.

Moving back and forth between the pen and Pinocchio, he writes, The fox and the cat are the novel's most modern characters. They persuade Pinocchio to bury his coins in the Field of Miracles on the promise that they will multiply overnight. Exploit impatience, exploit greed, frame skepticism as failure of imagination, and dismiss skeptics as lacking vision.

That structure is so familiar I barely need to name it, but let me name it anyway. Everyone from Jensen Huang to Sam Altman to Elon Musk spent a decade accumulating what I have called symbolic capital, wrote Malik. The reputation, the prestige, the weight of being seen as someone who understands the future better than the rest of us.

Now, each of them seems to be running some version of the Field of Miracles, with promises that keep not arriving, timelines that dissolve, products that exist primarily as announcements, and platforms run as machines for generating more reputation, regardless of what they actually do. They don't need to be right. They need to be believed.

Velocity is the new authority, and no one has weaponized that more effectively. Agree or disagree, he could think, and he could write. And I think we've lost something. Om Malik was 59 years old.
