My name is Risa Takagi and I'm a senior reporter at Generics Bulletin. In today's episode, we will be discussing abuses of intellectual property and patent games used to delay off-patent drug competition. I am joined by an expert on this topic, Tahir Amin, co-founder and CEO of Initiative for Medicines, Access and Knowledge, also known as I-MAK. Hello Tahir. Hi Urta.

I would imagine you're a pretty well-known figure in the IP and legal sectors, but for listeners who are in other parts of the industry, could you introduce yourself and give us a brief summary of what you do at I-MAK? Yeah, that's kind of you to say. My name is Tahir Amin. I am the co-founder and CEO of the Initiative for Medicines, Access and Knowledge. We are a non-profit organization that really looks at the intersection of intellectual property and its role in management.

Making medicines affordable, all-affordable and accessible in terms of both globally and particularly now in the United States, given that's where a lot of our focus is. I'm a lawyer by training, an intellectual property lawyer by training. I qualified in the United Kingdom. I've worked both for big law firms and multinational corporations.

And then about 20, almost 25 years ago, I moved into the public interest to look at how we can shape the current intellectual property system to better serve the public. And that's how I co-founded I-MAK. Great. Amazing. First, I wanted to kind of look at the history of pharma monopolies and patent abuse.
