I spent years in television chasing success until my body shut down. In many Latino households, right, like strength means surviving. There's so much shame around resting and it is a beautiful act of rebellion and love to rest. Is it that we don't have resources or is it that I don't believe I'm worthy of resources? I'm challenging what you think is possible. I'm challenging your identity for your own betterment.

The only thing standing in their way is them. Hola and welcome back to the Latina Leadership Podcast. I'm your host, Andrea Diaz. In today's episode, we're talking with Desiree Vazquez, a mind-body practitioner, sound healer, and founder of Mindful List with Desiree. We talk about holistic healing, reclaiming your power, and what it means to come back to yourself. So let's head to the conversation. Desiree, do you mind telling us about who you are and what you do? I'm Desiree. Hi.

I'm a second generation New Yorican who grew up in the Bronx, believing that strength meant pushing through. And I spent years in television chasing success until my body shut down and I was diagnosed with an autoimmune disorder called Hashimoto.

Healing my Hashimoto's has taught me that ambition without regulation is what leads to burnout. And so now I teach mindfulness as a skill, nervous system regulation, and identity work to corporations, public schools, groups of women.

I hold containers for women to exit out of survival mode. And we work on learning how to feel safe. We learn on focusing. We learn nervous system regulation. And my work blends neuroscience, ancient healing, sound therapy, so people can learn how to come back to themselves.

I love that. This is like a mix of everything. And you've talked about how you've done a lot of different stuff in your past. And, you know, so I saw you spent a decade in television before everything shifted. And can you share what was happening beneath the surface during that time? It finally made you say, I need a different path.

Absolutely. So beneath that surface, I was so depressed and so anxious and so deeply lost. Like there was always this inclination of like, this is not enough. What am I doing? What's next? I know this isn't it. And just like this level of unfulfillment.

And at the time I started, around the age of 25, started suffering from like chronic inflammation in my feet, but none of the doctors could tell me what was wrong. So I was working 12 to 18 hour days every single day. Right. And at some point my body started clocking out. Like my knees started to give out, my feet started to give out.

And so that shifted me into slowing down and working less in the field and more in post. So like as a story editor, and then COVID hit. And COVID was a terrible, beautiful blessing because it allowed us all to s...
