[SPEAKER_B] Welcome back, everybody. We are now in basically the early These summer days, we haven't quite crossed over the summer threshold, but we're getting close. This is the &quot;Second Opinion Podcast with Dr. Paul Kolodzik, where we learn everything possible about health and being healthy. Everything, everything, everything possible. Okay, there's nothing off the limits. Okay, but today we're doing what we like to call potpourri of topics because I find them very interesting. It's just fun to hit them fast, hit them, you know, and go to the next one. But so What's in your papers today?

[SPEAKER_C] Okay, on the top of the list, let's talk about aspirin and should you take a daily aspirin. Well, hold on.

[SPEAKER_B] Is aspirin like the oldest drug ever? Wasn't it created back in the Egyptian days or something like that?

[SPEAKER_C] Yeah, it's very old. Yes, it is. Very old.

[SPEAKER_B] And what does an aspirin actually do?

[SPEAKER_C] It inhibits clotting. It impacts the clotting mechanisms in your blood.

[SPEAKER_B] So it thins your blood.

[SPEAKER_C] Yeah, you can say it that way. Yeah. And that's why for years it's been recommended for people for cardiovascular disease. And it is still recommended along with other blood thinners for people that have known heart disease or have had strokes. Right. But this whole issue of what's called primary prevention and secondary prevention has come up. Now, secondary prevention is you've had a cardiac event or you've had a stroke and you're trying to prevent another one. Okay, and in that case aspirin is still very much accepted therapy for that. But for many, many years, generally from the '90s into the 2000s, aspirin was being recommended for primary prevention, which means somebody that's never had a stroke, somebody that's never had a heart attack, should be taking aspirin to thin their blood. Prophylactic. And that was very common. But that recommendation has changed in recent years. And I'll tell you for myself, I actually took aspirin for 15 years or so and I've stopped taking it. Really? Okay. I haven't had a cardiac or a cerebrovascular event yet. And it is a little bit of a hassle. You get a lot of bruising with it as well. Here, look at my arm.

[SPEAKER_B] Well, actually, I'm not on aspirin anymore because I'm on Plavix. When I was doing both, I was taking a baby aspirin and Plavix.

[SPEAKER_C] Yeah, it's called dual platelet therapy.

[SPEAKER_B] If I got cut, man, it was kind of hard to stop it from bleeding.
