Hello, my name is Chuck Vague. I'm a clinical professor of family medicine here at the University of California, Irvine, where I also serve as assistant dean in our medical school. And I'm very excited to introduce this subject to you today, Evidence-Based Initiatives for Nicotine Use Prevention. I work as well in the largest safety net clinic here in Orange County, so I see a lot of nicotine use, both vaping and combustible cigarettes.

And so we're going to give you some of the basics today in terms of what you as a health care team can do to reduce nicotine use overall. So tobacco overall is the leading cause of preventable morbidity and mortality in the United States. It causes nearly 500,000 deaths annually. About 1,600 young people start smoking on a daily basis still in the United States, even though we see rates of smoking declining.

We still see a fair amount of use of combustible cigarettes. And vaping has really replaced among young people, the use of combustible cigarettes. The use of e-cigarettes among high schoolers increased from 1.5% in 2011 to 27.5% in 2019. It has remained fairly steady since then.

And, of course, the challenge, we don't know a lot about the long-term effects of the use of e-cigarettes. But there's a clear link among young people that the use of e-cigarettes leads to increased use of combustible cigarettes, where we know the long-term harm very well.
